When I first read Tom McCarthy’s ‘The Remainder’, it was like getting hit on the head by a very luminous and unusual object. I went around thinking, this is what art practice really is. I performed/recounted the plot of the novel to unsuspecting audiences on various occasions. Years later, I recorded it as a voice note and sent it to Max Syedtollan, hoping that he would do something with it, i.e. set it to music, which he did, making it a stable ‘piece’.
